There has been a doctors surgery at 346 Grimshaw Lane for over a hundred years. The previous partners were (as some of you will remember) Dr McHenry, Dr Wallace, Dr McKee and Dr McCrea. Dr Thomason replaced Dr McKee on his retirement in 1979 and Dr Martin started at the Practice in 1982.
The Practice took over the surgery at Mount Road in the early 00's and then moved up to the newly built Alkrington Health Centre in 2008. In 1979 the Practice of two partners had a patient list of 5500 people. It employed one morning receptionist and one evening receptionist, plus a cleaner. The Junction and Alkrington Surgeries now have a patient list size of 8000+ people and employ 31 members of staff, plus several locum doctors. Our doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, counsellors and receptionists all split their time between both sites (some work more at one than the other) whilst our admin staff are usually based at one location.
In April 2021, Dr Sayna Molana and Dr Iriowen Uwaifo joined Dr Thomason as GP partners at the practice. At the same time Dr Martin made the decision to retire from General Practice after 39 years.
After handing the reigns to Dr Molana and Dr Uwaifo, Dr Thomason has now also decided to retire.

Note to breastfeeding mums - please don’t worry about breast feeding in our surgery! If you need anything at all, such as a glass of water (we know that this is thirsty work), please just ask.

Access Arrangements
Both sites are accessible to all patients. Whilst there is wheelchair access at the Junction Surgery, parking is on the main road, so some patients prefer to attend the Alkrington Surgery where there is designated disabled parking spaces.
For those with hearing aids we have induction loops at reception a portable hearing loop available which can be taken into a consultating room where required.
There are accessible bathrooms at both sites and changing facilities.
If you would like a longer appointment due to a disability or communication requirement (translator required, or impairments) please ask and we will provide a double appointment.
